From field to factory
The coconut palms from which our direct coconut juice is sourced naturally thrive in the tropics, specifically within a 1,000-kilometer belt above and below the equator. These palms require consistent warmth and humidity to grow optimally. Our NFC coconut palms are cultivated in Brazil and Sri Lanka, regions that provide the ideal conditions for producing high-quality coconuts.
Over the past 22 years, we have established strong partnerships with numerous small farmers and local cooperatives. These collaborations are often built on long-term agreements, many of which were sealed with a simple handshake.
Since 2005, Green Coco Europe has been active in Sri Lanka. We have brought our knowledge and expertise to the region and were the first to commercialize and export coconut water internationally in 2005. Together with our partners, we have converted fields to organic farming and continue to work on expanding sustainable cultivation practices to produce premium coconut juice. These efforts have led to the creation of thousands of jobs.
Sri Lanka offers the advantage of shorter transport routes to Europe compared to other production countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, which not only reduces delivery times but also lowers CO2 emissions.
Coconut palms have long been an integral part of Sri Lankan culture and economy. The fruits of the palms, including the young King Coconut and the mature green coconuts, are traditionally used for various products: coconut water, coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut flakes, and virgin coconut oil. The hard shells are used as fuel or processed into activated charcoal, the wood serves as building material, and the palm fronds are used for roofing.
Sri Lanka’s rich history and culture, combined with the friendly and reliable nature of its people, create a professional environment that meets the highest production standards.
A distinctive feature of coconut plantations in Sri Lanka is their sustainable, small-scale farming practices, which stand in stark contrast to the vast monocultures often found in other countries. These fields have existed for many years and were never created at the expense of the rainforest. From the beginning, Green Coco Europe has ensured that coconuts are sourced only from existing, sustainably managed fields. The use of monkeys for harvesting is strictly rejected and unusual in Sri Lanka.
Our coconut farmers carefully harvest the coconuts and deliver them to our partner facilities in the growing region. Within 36 hours of harvesting, the nuts are cracked open, the fresh coconut juice is filtered, and it is transported in tankers to our factory. There, the juice is UHT-pasteurized and aseptically filled into large containers to preserve its freshness and quality.
